The daily life of a unit manager

🚛 One day, one customer, hundreds of bottles… and a close-knit team at the helm of a truck like no other!
Welcome behind the scenes of a job that is technical, demanding and deeply human. Every day is different, every customer is unique.
Today, we present the first episode of this series. 🎥

Who am I?

Hello, my name is Florian Danede, I am 32 years old and I am in charge of a bottling lorry at the estate at Sobemab.
I supervise a team of three operators and a forklift driver. Together, we go directly to customers' premises to bottle their wine, as close as possible to their needs.

My journey to becoming a unit manager

I joined Sobemab in 2018 as a temporary operator. I then worked as a filter operator for two years before moving on to the role of team leader.
Before that? I already had experience in bottling… but vodka! 🍸

A typical day in a mobile unit

As soon as we arrive at the customer's premises, we set up the lorry:

  • water and electricity connections,
  • connection of the customer's tanks to ours,
  • technical adjustments if necessary.

Then we start the bottling process. Throughout the day, we carry out regular checks and manage format changes.

At the end of the service, it's time for cleaning and tidying up.

Mobile truck vs fixed line

Mobile bottling differs from a fixed line in its setting: we work directly at the customer's premises, outdoors.

Our tasks focus on:

  • bottling,
  • capping bottles (known as ‘tiré-bouché’).

Although the operations are more limited than at a fixed site, the requirements remain the same: rigour, precision and teamwork.

A close-knit and organised team

A successful day depends on a well-coordinated team:

  • Team leader (me 😉): customer liaison, machine adjustments, supervision.
  • 3 operators: one feeds empty bottles into the line, the other two arrange the full bottles according to the customer's requirements.
  • 1 forklift operator: supplies pallets and removes finished boxes.

Each role is essential to ensure the smooth running and quality of the work.

What's next?

This first episode is just a glimpse into a rich and exciting profession.
